Zimbabwe’s Historic T20 Performance

Zimbabwe rewrote the history books on Wednesday, setting a new record for the highest total in T20 cricket by scoring 344 for 4 against Gambia during the T20 World Cup Africa sub-regional qualifier in Nairobi. The record-breaking innings featured a stunning century by Sikandar Raza, who became the first Zimbabwean to score a T20I hundred, reaching the landmark in just 33 balls.

The team’s explosive batting display included a total of 27 sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes in a T20 innings. Previously, the record for the highest T20 score belonged to Nepal with 314, and for the most sixes, also held by Nepal with 26.

Raza Leads the Charge

Raza was the star performer, coming to the crease in the eighth over and immediately making his presence felt. He hit a six off his third ball and quickly went on a run spree that saw him equal the record for the second-fastest century in T20I cricket. His 33-ball ton matched Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton’s feat for Namibia against Nepal earlier this year. Raza’s blistering knock of 133 not out included 15 sixes, with other Zimbabwe batters adding 12 more.

Gambia’s Struggles

Gambia, a small West African nation, struggled to contain the run flow as their bowlers were taken apart. Musa Jorbateh set an unwanted record by conceding the most runs in a T20 match, with his four overs costing 93 runs. Five Gambian bowlers went for over 50 runs each in their spells. The team was unable to mount a significant response and was bowled out for 54, resulting in the biggest victory in T20 cricket history by runs.

Zimbabwe’s Record-Breaking Batting

Zimbabwe’s intent was clear from the very start at the Ruaraka Sports Club Ground, where they brought up their fifty in just 3.2 overs. Tadiwanashe Marumani scored a rapid fifty off 13 balls, while the team reached the 100-run mark before the powerplay ended. The innings featured a total of 57 boundaries, setting another T20 record. Brian Bennett contributed 50 off 26 balls, and Clive Mandande smashed 53 off 17 balls, finishing the innings with a six.

Road Ahead in the Qualifiers

Zimbabwe now holds a perfect record with four wins in four matches, while Gambia is still seeking its first victory, having also forfeited their first two games against Rwanda and Seychelles. Zimbabwe will look to continue their dominant form in the qualifiers as they aim for a spot in the T20 World Cup.
