Sri Lanka Gears Up for Australia Test Series with New Faces

Sri Lanka has named its squad for the two-match Test series against Australia, starting January 29 in Galle. The announcement includes some notable inclusions, with Sonal Dinusha and Lahiru Udara earning their maiden Test call-ups.

While Australia comes into the series as the likely finalists for the World Test Championship (WTC), Sri Lanka’s hopes for the WTC final have long faded after losing six out of their 11 matches in this cycle. However, with seasoned players and fresh faces, Sri Lanka aims to use this series to build momentum for the future.

Uncapped Stars in the Spotlight

Sonal Dinusha

A 24-year-old left-arm spinning allrounder, Sonal Dinusha, makes his first appearance in the national Test squad. His selection follows stellar performances in domestic cricket, where he scored two first-class centuries in the last month for Colombo Cricket Club.

  • First-Class Stats:
    • Batting Average: 40.08
    • Bowling Average: 24.06

Dinusha also impressed for Sri Lanka A in their November series against Pakistan A, further cementing his case for a spot.

Lahiru Udara

A reliable domestic performer, Lahiru Udara, is included in the squad as potential cover for Pathum Nissanka, who is recovering from a groin injury sustained during the ODI series against New Zealand.

  • First-Class Career:
    • Matches: 97
    • Recent Form: Scored 142 and 65 in his last five innings.

Challenges for Sri Lanka

The squad announcement comes amidst fitness concerns.

  • Pathum Nissanka is a doubt for the first Test, while captain Dhananjaya de Silva is also recovering from a side strain.
  • The bowling attack is well-rounded with spin options like Prabath Jayasuriya, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Nishan Peiris, while pacers Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, and Milan Rathnayake complete the lineup.

Key Milestones and Players to Watch

Dimuth Karunaratne’s 100th Test

The second Test will mark Dimuth Karunaratne’s milestone 100th match. Despite Sri Lanka’s struggles in recent series, Karunaratne remains a dependable opener, and this occasion adds extra significance to the series.

Australia’s Dominance

Australia enters the series with a near-guaranteed spot in the WTC Final. They’ll rely on their strong form, having won 11 of their 17 matches this cycle.
