Litton Das Named Captain for West Indies T20I Series

Bangladesh has announced its squad for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies, with Litton Das taking charge as captain. This marks the first time Litton will captain Bangladesh for an entire T20I series. He previously filled in as captain for Mahmudullah during the tour of New Zealand in April 2021.

The three-match series will round off Bangladesh’s ongoing all-format tour of the Caribbean, and all matches will be held at Kingstown.

Shamim Hossain Returns, Ripon Mondol Gets a Call-Up

The Bangladesh squad features some fresh faces and notable comebacks. Shamim Hossain, a young batting allrounder, has been recalled. The 24-year-old last played for Bangladesh in a T20I back in December 2023 against New Zealand. Shamim has had a mixed record in T20Is, scoring 254 runs in 14 innings with a strike rate of 115.98. His top score of 51 remains his only half-century in the format so far.

Another key inclusion is Ripon Mondol, a 21-year-old medium-fast bowler. He previously played three T20Is for Bangladesh during the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, where he impressed by picking up 4 wickets. His selection for this series indicates Bangladesh’s intent to develop young pace-bowling talent.

Notable Absentees: Shanto, Shakib, and Mahmudullah

There are some significant absences in the squad. Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh’s regular all-format captain, is missing as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury he picked up during the series against Afghanistan in November.

There is also no word on the availability of star allrounder Shakib Al Hasan. His future in international cricket remains uncertain, and no official statement has been made about his status for the T20I series.

Mahmudullah, who retired from T20I cricket, is also not part of the squad.

What To Expect From the T20I Series?

With several new faces in the squad, Bangladesh will be hoping for fresh energy and new match-winners. Litton Das, as captain, has the responsibility to guide this young squad to a strong finish against a competitive West Indies side.

Bangladesh fans will have high expectations from seasoned players like Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, and Nasum Ahmed, but it’s the performances of the youngsters like Tanzid Hasan, Ripon Mondol, and Shamim Hossain that could make this series exciting.

The absence of big names like Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto is a setback, but it also opens up opportunities for the next generation of Bangladeshi cricketers to prove themselves.

With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, every match counts as Bangladesh looks to solidify its lineup for the big event.
