Inglis Enters the Test Opener Discussion

Josh Inglis, Australia’s current white-ball wicketkeeper, is being considered as a potential Test opener against India, according to respected New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd. With 19-year-old Sam Konstas also in contention, Shipperd believes Inglis’ experience and current form make him a viable candidate for the opening slot in the first Test at Optus Stadium, Perth.

Inglis has impressed with his performances in the Sheffield Shield, scoring 122, 48, 101, and 26 not out in his first four innings this season. Though he has yet to make his Test debut, his record in limited-overs internationals, where he has played 49 matches for Australia, supports his case.

Shipperd Sees Inglis as a ‘Right-Handed Warner’

Shipperd described Inglis as a “right-handed version of David Warner,” noting his ability to play aggressive cricket and score freely around the wicket. Despite not having a traditional record as a first-class opener, Inglis has shown his versatility in international T20s, scoring two centuries, including one against India in India.

While Alex Carey currently holds the wicketkeeper spot for the Test side, Inglis’ batting prowess keeps him in the conversation. His seven first-class centuries have all come while batting in the middle order, but Shipperd believes his adaptability could fill a gap at the top of the order.

Konstas Remains in the Mix

Shipperd also backed Sam Konstas, who has shown potential despite a challenging game against Victoria, scoring 2 and 43. He believes Konstas’ skills and recent performances keep him in consideration, comparing the young talent to a young Ricky Ponting.

Konstas recently became the third youngest player to score twin centuries in a Sheffield Shield game, following Ponting and another rising star. The upcoming matches for the Australia A team will be crucial in determining his chances for a Test debut.

Harris Still a Contender

Marcus Harris, despite his struggles in the recent Shield match against NSW, remains in contention for a spot. Victoria coach Chris Rogers highlighted Harris’ good form and the challenging conditions posed by bowlers like Mitchell Starc.
