KL Rahul’s Future with Lucknow Super Giants in Doubt Ahead of 2025 IPL Mega Auction
KL Rahul, who has been the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) since the team’s debut in IPL 2022, is unlikely to be retained by the franchise as they prepare for the upcoming mega auction ahead of the 2025 IPL season. The decision comes after LSG’s underwhelming performance in IPL 2024, where they finished seventh, despite making the playoffs in their first two seasons.
Rahul’s uncertain future has sparked a debate over whether he will be among the retained players, if he even wishes to stay with LSG, or if the team might retain him without continuing with him as captain.
A Key Player but Under Scrutiny
Rahul has been LSG’s top-scorer over the past three seasons. He was the second-highest run-getter in IPL 2022 with 616 runs. Despite an injury sidelining him for the second half of the 2023 season, Rahul bounced back to become LSG’s top-scorer in IPL 2024 with 520 runs. However, his strike rate of 136.12 has often come under the spotlight, as the IPL has seen much higher scoring rates in recent years.
Speculation Following IPL 2024 Performance
The turning point for the speculation around Rahul’s future came after LSG’s crushing defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad last season. An animated conversation between LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka and Rahul was caught on camera, leading to widespread speculation. However, Goenka later clarified to the team that while he was disappointed with the loss, his chat with Rahul was amicable.
In August, during the announcement of former India pacer Zaheer Khan as LSG’s mentor, Goenka referred to Rahul as “family” but was non-committal regarding player retention plans. This further fueled speculation about Rahul’s future with the franchise.
Decision Imminent as IPL Retention Deadline Approaches
It is understood that during a recent meeting with LSG’s owners, Rahul did not commit to accepting a retention offer if one were made. The final decision regarding his retention is expected in the coming days. The deadline for IPL franchises to submit their lists of retained players is October 31. Teams are allowed to retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped internationals ahead of the 2025 mega auction.
What’s Next for KL Rahul?
With LSG’s captaincy and squad structure in flux, Rahul’s future in the team remains uncertain. If released, he will likely be one of the hottest picks at the upcoming IPL mega auction, given his proven track record and experience. However, if retained, there could still be questions about his role and whether he will continue to lead the side.
