With the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy set to be hosted in Pakistan, questions are swirling about whether India’s captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Karachi for the captains’ event. Scheduled tentatively for February 16 or 17, 2025, this event traditionally takes place in the host country. However, the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan have cast doubt on India’s participation in this pre-tournament ceremony.

BCCI’s Stance on Rohit’s Travel

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has yet to discuss or confirm whether Rohit Sharma will represent India at the captains’ event. According to Devjit Saikia, the newly-appointed secretary of the BCCI:

“It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet.”

Further complicating the situation, it remains unclear if government approval would be required for Rohit’s potential visit to Pakistan.

Political Tensions Impacting Cricket Relations

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2012 due to political tensions, meeting only in ICC tournaments or multi-nation events. While Pakistan has traveled to India for ICC events during this period, India has not played in Pakistan since 2008.

To address these challenges, the ICC introduced a hybrid hosting model for tournaments until 2027, with Dubai hosting India’s matches in the Champions Trophy.

PCB and ICC’s Expectations

The PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) has requested the ICC to ensure all team captains are available for the traditional photoshoot and opening ceremony, which marks the start of the tournament. However, the ICC is still finalizing travel logistics and schedules for teams.

Interestingly, during the 2024 T20 World Cup, the ICC opted for a digital captains’ launch with lighting projections in New York instead of a traditional in-person event. A similar approach could be considered for the Champions Trophy if logistical challenges persist.

BCCI on Uniform Regulations

In response to speculation about India objecting to the host nation’s name on player jerseys, Saikia clarified:

“BCCI will follow every uniform-related ICC rule during the Champions Trophy. Whatever the other teams do regarding the logo and dress code, we will adhere to it in true letter and spirit.”

This statement reflects India’s commitment to abiding by ICC regulations during the tournament.
