Alyssa Healy’s Knee Injury Alters Plans for New Zealand ODIs

Australia’s ODI captain, Alyssa Healy, will feature as a batter only in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. A lingering knee injury has ruled her out of wicketkeeping duties, with Beth Mooney stepping in as the replacement behind the stumps.

Despite her limitations, Healy is determined to use the series to regain form ahead of the Ashes in January.

Key Details from Healy’s Statement

  • Focus on Batting:
    • “I won’t be wicketkeeping this series … but there’s not a lot of cricket leading into the Ashes,” Healy shared. “For me, it’s an opportunity to try and get back on the park as a batter and find some runs.”
  • Injury Update:
    • The knee is “tracking well,” but her recovery is being managed on a day-to-day basis.

Youth Stepping Up

Healy’s absence as a keeper allowed Georgia Voll to debut in the recent series against India, where she delivered impressive performances, including a century. With Healy’s return, Voll is likely to make way.

“We’ve been transitioning for a while, getting some youth in the side,” Healy said. “The depth in Australian cricket is really strong, and players stepping in seem to make runs or take wickets.”

Battle for the Rose Bowl

The series will also renew the historic rivalry for the Rose Bowl Trophy. Australia has dominated in this format, with New Zealand last winning a bilateral ODI series against them in 1999 and an ODI match in 2017.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine expressed optimism, especially with the team returning home as T20 World Champions. “We know the challenge we’re up against and we’ll have to be at our best to win at least two games to get that cup back,” Devine said.
