Bangladesh’s hopes of directly qualifying for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup came crashing down after an eight-wicket loss to the West Indies in the third ODI. Despite being level on 21 points with New Zealand in the Women’s Championship table, Bangladesh fell short due to fewer wins – eight compared to New Zealand’s nine.

This defeat means New Zealand has secured the sixth and final direct qualification spot, joining heavyweights like Australia, India, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka in the tournament to be held later this year in India.

Bangladesh, however, now faces a tougher road ahead as they prepare for the World Cup qualifiers, where they will compete with teams like West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland, Scotland, and Thailand. Only two teams from the qualifiers will make it to the main event.

What Went Wrong for Bangladesh?

The third ODI against West Indies turned out to be a disappointment for Bangladesh. Batting first, they were bowled out for a paltry 118 runs in just 43.5 overs. Sharmin Akhter showed some resistance with a top score of 37, but the rest of the lineup collapsed. After a decent start of 94 for 3, the team lost their last seven wickets for just 24 runs.

West Indies’ bowlers, led by Karishma Ramharack, dominated the game. Ramharack secured her second consecutive four-wicket haul, conceding only 12 runs in 6.5 overs, while Zaida James chipped in with two wickets.

Chasing the target, West Indies comfortably reached the score in 27.3 overs. Qiana Joseph top-scored with 39, and Deandra Dottin stayed unbeaten with 33 to guide her team to an easy victory.

Bangladesh’s Road to the World Cup

The loss against West Indies means Bangladesh now has to fight for a spot in the main event through the World Cup qualifiers. Alongside Bangladesh, the qualifiers will include:

  • West Indies
  • Pakistan
  • Ireland
  • Scotland
  • Thailand

With only two spots available, the competition will be intense. Teams like West Indies and Pakistan will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge, and Bangladesh will need to bring their A-game to secure qualification.

What’s Next for Bangladesh?

Bangladesh’s tour of West Indies isn’t over yet. They are set to play three T20Is on January 27, 29, and 31 in Basseterre. This will be an opportunity for the team to regroup and regain confidence after their ODI series disappointment.

Key Takeaways from the Match

  1. Bangladesh’s Collapse: From a steady 94/3 to 118 all out, the batting lineup couldn’t withstand the pressure.
  2. Ramharack’s Dominance: The West Indies spinner took consecutive four-wicket hauls, showcasing her ability to dismantle batting orders.
  3. Qualification Challenges: Bangladesh now needs to perform well in the World Cup qualifiers to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
  4. Upcoming T20Is: A chance for Bangladesh to bounce back and build momentum for the qualifiers.
