New Zealand’s Test squad for the upcoming three-match series against India has suffered a setback as fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out due to a knee injury. Jacob Duffy, who is yet to make his Test debut, has been called up as Sears’ replacement. Duffy will head to India on Wednesday, the same day the first Test begins in Bengaluru.

Sears’ Knee Injury

The decision to rule Sears out came after he experienced pain in his left knee during training in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. Subsequent scans revealed a meniscus tear, delaying his departure to India. New Zealand Cricket confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating that Sears underwent medical consultations, but it was ultimately decided that he would not be fit in time for the series. Details on his treatment and recovery plan will be provided soon.

Sears had made his Test debut earlier this year against Australia in Christchurch, where he took five wickets. He was considered one of New Zealand’s promising fast-bowling talents, known for his genuine pace. The knee injury is a significant blow for the young cricketer, who was looking to establish himself in the Test format.

Jacob Duffy Steps In

Jacob Duffy, 30, has been added to the squad as Sears’ replacement. Although uncapped in Tests, Duffy brings valuable experience with 299 first-class wickets to his name. He has represented New Zealand in six ODIs and 14 T20Is, earning a reputation for his consistent performances in white-ball cricket. His recent stint with Nottinghamshire in the County Championship also helped bolster his case for a place in the Test squad.

Head coach Gary Stead expressed his optimism about Duffy’s inclusion: “It’s an exciting opportunity for Jacob, who has been around the Test squad before. With three Tests ahead of us, he has every chance of making his debut.” Stead also acknowledged Sears’ absence as a loss but remains hopeful for his quick recovery.

New Zealand’s Bowling Options for the First Test

With Sears unavailable and Duffy not arriving in India in time for the first Test, New Zealand will rely on their other pace options, including Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Will O’Rourke. In the spin department, Ajaz Patel leads the way, supported by allrounders Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, and Michael Bracewell. Glenn Phillips can also contribute with his part-time spin, while Daryl Mitchell adds depth to the pace attack.

Series Schedule

The tour kicks off with the first Test in Bengaluru, followed by matches in Pune and Mumbai. New Zealand will aim to bounce back from their recent setbacks and put up a strong fight against a formidable Indian side.
