Gillespie Frustrated by Lack of Clarity in His Role as Pakistan Coach
Jason Gillespie, the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, has expressed his frustration over the evolving scope of his job, emphasizing the importance of clear communication. The former Australia cricketer, who was recently removed from the selection panel alongside captain Shan Masood, admitted that the current role wasn’t what he initially signed up for, though he is willing to adapt to the circumstances.
“There are always frustrations from time to time,” Gillespie said during an interview with Sky Sports. “When I joined Pakistan cricket, I was informed there was a long-term plan, and communication was key. So, it’s frustrating when things don’t align with that vision.”
A Changing Role with New Challenges
Since his appointment earlier this year, Gillespie had envisioned a long-term approach to rebuilding the team. He had warned against short-term fixes driven by one-or two-year contracts, suggesting that they might hinder sustained development. However, a lack of consistency has seen multiple selection panels within a short span, with Gillespie and Masood sidelined from squad selection and even pitch preparations for the second Test against England.
“There have already been three different selection panels since I started,” he said. “It’s important to adapt to these changes and understand that this is a different environment. You just have to go with the flow, even if it’s not how you’d prefer things to be.”
Learning Curve in a New Environment
Gillespie acknowledged that adapting to the dynamic nature of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is a part of the learning experience. He understands that as a foreign coach, the environment is different from what he was used to in Australia, requiring constant adjustments and a flexible approach.
“There are rapid changes here, often without much notice,” he admitted. “Being a foreigner, I need to respect the unique ways in which things are done. It’s not about right or wrong, just different.”
Strong Relationship with Players
Despite the challenges, Gillespie’s relationship with the players has remained solid. He praised captain Shan Masood for his composure and expressed confidence in Babar Azam despite the star player’s recent dip in form. Gillespie continues to back Babar, whom he described as one of the best players in the world, and expects him to bounce back strongly.
“Babar’s going through a lean patch, but even the best players face these phases,” he said. “I’m very confident he’ll return to scoring runs across all formats.”
Navigating Criticism and Player Welfare
The coach also highlighted the impact of former players’ opinions on social media, explaining how positive feedback can motivate the players, while excessive criticism can have the opposite effect. Gillespie’s focus remains on creating a supportive environment where players feel protected and valued.
“I’m very protective of the players and the staff,” he said. “We’re trying to create a safe space, and if that gets undermined, it can be frustrating. The players look up to former cricketers, and their feedback matters a lot.”
A Busy Test Season Ahead
With the ongoing Test being Pakistan’s fifth of the season and four more scheduled, Gillespie remains optimistic about guiding the team forward, despite the recent setbacks and uncertainties surrounding the coaching role.
