India’s hopes of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have taken a hit with captain Jasprit Bumrah leaving the field due to back spasms on Day 2 of the New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Bumrah’s exit has raised significant concerns, as he has been a pivotal player for India throughout the tour.

What Happened to Jasprit Bumrah?

Bumrah, who has been in sensational form on the tour, bowled just one over after lunch on the second day before walking off the field. His speeds were notably down during the over, ranging from the low 120s to early 130s kph. Shortly after, he was spotted out of his whites, leaving the stadium with the team doctor for scans.

Prasidh Krishna, addressing the media post-day’s play, confirmed the injury:

“Yes, he had a back spasm. He had gone for scans. The medical team is monitoring him. So we will know whenever the medical team gets back to us.”

Bumrah returned to the ground later in the day, but his participation in the remainder of the match remains uncertain.

Bumrah’s Workload Under Scrutiny

The injury has reignited discussions about Bumrah’s heavy workload during the series. He has bowled a staggering 152.1 overs across nine innings, picking up an incredible 32 wickets at an average of 13.06. This workload includes a mammoth 52 overs in the Melbourne Test—his highest in a single match.

Record-Breaking Performances

Bumrah’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. He surpassed Bishan Bedi’s record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler on an Australian tour and has been climbing the all-time wickets list. However, his relentless workload has raised concerns:

  • Rohit Sharma, after the Melbourne Test, acknowledged the need to manage Bumrah’s workload carefully, saying:”If somebody is in such great form, you want to try and maximise that form as much as you can. But there comes a time where you need to step back and give him that little bit of extra breather as well.”

The Leadership Dilemma

Bumrah’s injury also exposes India’s lack of a designated vice-captain for the series. With Rohit Sharma stepping down from the final Test due to poor form, Bumrah was leading the side. Following his exit, it appeared that Virat Kohli had taken over as the stand-in captain during the middle session of Day 2.

This lack of clarity in leadership could prove costly for India in a match they must win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

A History of Back Issues

Bumrah’s back spasms are particularly worrying given his history of back injuries. In 2022, he was sidelined for nearly a year due to a stress fracture in his back. This latest issue raises concerns about whether his workload is aggravating old injuries.

India’s Road Ahead Without Bumrah

If Bumrah is ruled out of the SCG Test, India will face a massive challenge:

1. Bowling Leadership

Bumrah’s ability to deliver with both the new and old ball has been unmatched. Without him, the onus will fall on the rest of the bowling attack, including Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Ravindra Jadeja, to pick up the slack.

2. Batting Response

India’s batting has been inconsistent throughout the series. With their captain potentially unavailable, the top and middle orders must take extra responsibility to set competitive totals.
