New Zealand’s star batter, Kane Williamson, will miss the third and final Test against India as he continues to recover from a groin injury. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is prioritizing his fitness for the upcoming three-Test home series against England, starting November 28.

NZC Takes Cautious Approach on Williamson’s Recovery

After sustaining a groin injury on the Sri Lanka tour, Williamson’s recovery has been closely monitored. NZC has decided to keep him in New Zealand, ensuring a full recovery before the England series. Head coach Gary Stead shared, “Kane is progressing well but isn’t quite ready to join us. The cautious approach now will help him prepare for England.”

With the England series still a month away, NZC is prioritizing Williamson’s health to ensure he’s ready for the opening Test in Christchurch.

New Zealand Creates History in India Without Williamson

Despite the absence of their star player, New Zealand has achieved an unprecedented 2-0 lead in the current Test series against India. Under Tom Latham’s captaincy, New Zealand made history by handing India its first home series loss since 2012, breaking India’s 18-series winning streak on home soil.

  • First Test Victory: In Bengaluru, New Zealand bowled India out for 46 in the first innings, leading to an eight-wicket win.
  • Second Test Triumph: On a spin-friendly Pune pitch, Mitchell Santner’s exceptional 13-wicket performance led New Zealand to a 113-run victory.

The third Test is set to start on November 1 in Mumbai.

Impact on World Test Championship (WTC) Rankings

This series has significantly impacted the WTC points table:

  • India now has a 62.82% points lead.
  • New Zealand has climbed to fourth place with 50% points, enhancing their chances of reaching the WTC final next year.
