Khawaja Admits He Was ‘Just Getting Bumrah-ed’

Usman Khawaja, Australia’s talented opener, was once confident about facing India’s speedster Jasprit Bumrah. Heading into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Khawaja wasn’t too concerned, having never been dismissed by Bumrah in their previous seven Test innings. However, after facing him in the series, Khawaja made a surprising revelation: he was “just getting Bumrah-ed.”

In an interview with ABC Sport, Khawaja shared how challenging it was to face the Indian pacer during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. He admitted, “It was friggin’ tough work. People were asking me, ‘What’s going on?’ I’m being honest, I was just getting Bumrah-ed.”

Bumrah: The Best Fast Bowler Khawaja Has Faced

By the end of the series, Bumrah had been a constant threat, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with an impressive 32 wickets at an average of just 13.06. His performance earned him the Player of the Series award, and even Khawaja couldn’t deny the impact of Bumrah’s bowling.

Khawaja, who had previously managed to hold his ground against Bumrah, said, “Bumrah is the toughest bowler I’ve ever faced.” While Khawaja was able to survive many of the challenges during previous encounters, this time, Bumrah’s skill and consistency proved too much.

Bumrah’s Evolution: A New and Improved Threat

What made Bumrah so difficult for Khawaja? The Australia opener explained that Bumrah’s improvement since his first tour of Australia in 2018-19 was evident. “He’s six years more mature, he’s a better bowler, he understands his skills. He knows who he’s bowling to and has different plans for everyone,” Khawaja said.

Bumrah’s rise has been remarkable, as he’s become more dangerous over time. Khawaja added, “He was always good, but this year, he’s something different.” Bumrah’s accuracy, pace, and ability to surprise the batter make him a nightmare to face.

The Absence of Bumrah: A Sense of Relief for Australia

During the crucial moments of the Sydney Test, Bumrah wasn’t on the field due to back spasms. His absence gave Australia a glimmer of hope. Khawaja recalled, “You never want to see anyone injured, but thank God for us. Because today would have been an absolute nightmare facing him on that wicket.”

With Bumrah sidelined, Australia felt a significant shift in momentum. Khawaja admitted that the team’s confidence soared when they saw Bumrah was no longer playing. “As soon as we didn’t see Bumrah out there, we had this sense of feeling that we’ve actually got a chance here.”

Why Bumrah Is So Hard to Score Off

Khawaja praised Bumrah for his ability to consistently challenge even the best players. He said, “No matter how good a bowler is, they’ll always give me something to score off. But I just never felt like I could score off him.”

For Khawaja, Bumrah’s relentless pace and accuracy made him one of the toughest bowlers to face. Khawaja noted, “It just felt so hard. I’ve never found someone so hard to score off and get off strike as Bumrah.”

Bumrah’s ability to maintain pressure and set up wickets with skill and precision is a testament to his mastery of the game. Khawaja acknowledged that Bumrah always seemed to have a “wicket ball up his sleeve,” making it difficult to relax at the crease.

What Makes Bumrah the Toughest?

Bumrah’s combination of pace, precision, and intelligence makes him the complete package for a fast bowler. He constantly adapts his strategy based on the conditions and his opponent. Khawaja highlighted how Bumrah’s ability to read the game and bowl with intensity sets him apart from many other fast bowlers in the world.

Here’s why Khawaja finds Bumrah so difficult to face:

  • Unpredictable Pace: Bumrah can vary his pace effectively, making it hard to get comfortable against him.
  • Relentless Pressure: He can bowl over after over without giving batters any opportunity to breathe.
  • Bowling Intelligence: Bumrah knows his strengths and consistently targets the weaknesses of the batter.
