As Pakistan prepares to host the West Indies for a two-Test series starting January 17, the team has opted for a spin-dominated approach. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made significant changes to the squad, resting key pacers and recalling experienced spinners to exploit the spin-friendly pitches expected in Multan.

Key Squad Changes for Pakistan

The most notable updates in the squad are:

  1. Resting the Pace Quartet:
    • Mohammad Abbas, Naseem Shah, Aamer Jamal, and Mir Hamza have been rested as part of workload management.
    • Abbas, who shone in the South Africa series with ten wickets, is rested due to Multan’s spin-friendly pitch conditions.
  2. Return of Spin Specialists:
    • Sajid Khan, instrumental in Pakistan’s victory against England, has been recalled to partner with Noman Ali.
    • Abrar Ahmed, another key spinner, rejoins the squad to strengthen Pakistan’s bowling attack.
  3. Fresh Faces in Fast Bowling:
    • Kashif Ali, a fast bowler, has been included for the first time, while Mohammad Ali makes his comeback.

Batting Lineup Adjustments

  • Opening Combination Revamp:
    • With Saim Ayub ruled out due to an ankle fracture and Abdullah Shafique dropped after a string of poor performances, the selectors have brought in Imam-ul-Haq and Muhammad Hurraira as the new openers.
  • Wicketkeeping Backup:
    • Rohail Nazir replaces Haseebullah Khan as the backup wicketkeeper for Mohammad Rizwan, following Haseebullah’s hand injury.

Why Spin Is the Focus

Multan’s pitches are known for aiding spinners, prompting Pakistan to rely heavily on spin bowling. The combination of Sajid Khan, Noman Ali, and Abrar Ahmed offers a formidable spin attack capable of exploiting these conditions.
