In an electrifying T20 World Cup encounter, West Indies Women’s team found a new star in Qiana Joseph, whose stunning performance helped the team secure a semi-final spot for the first time since 2018. Chasing 142 to qualify, the opening duo of Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews put England under immense pressure with a 102-run partnership, leading West Indies to victory on the final ball of the 18th over.

Joseph’s Breakthrough Performance

Qiana Joseph, playing in her 15th T20I, showcased her prowess by scoring a career-best 52 off 38 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Her aggressive approach from the outset set the tone for the innings, and she reached her maiden fifty in just 34 balls, the fastest against England in this World Cup.

Captain Hayley Matthews praised Joseph’s fighting spirit, recalling a moment during the innings break when she sensed Joseph’s determination: “I looked at her and I said, ‘What’s wrong? You look like you’re upset.’ She said, ‘I’m just ready.'”

Overcoming England’s Dominance

West Indies had struggled against England, having lost their last 13 encounters since 2018. However, this victory marked a turning point as Joseph’s explosive batting, combined with Matthews’ 50 off 38 balls, powered the team to their highest powerplay score of the tournament at 67 without loss.

The victory was even sweeter given the team’s underdog status coming into the competition. Matthews highlighted the importance of belief and heart in the squad: “We haven’t beaten England in about six years… but everyone still came here with a belief and a fight, and it just shows what we can do as a West Indian team.”

Filling the Void Left by Stafanie Taylor

With star batter Stafanie Taylor sidelined due to a knee injury, Joseph was promoted to the top order and embraced the responsibility with confidence. Earlier in the tournament, she had been used in different roles, adapting to the team’s needs. Her consistency and versatility paid off in this must-win game, allowing Deandra Dottin to finish the chase with 27 off 19 balls after the openers had laid the foundation.

A Team Effort with Growing Depth

Joseph’s emergence is a testament to West Indies’ depth, with multiple players stepping up at crucial moments. This year, the team has seen other contributions, such as Karishma Ramharack’s 4 for 17 against Bangladesh, and now Joseph’s match-winning knock. This increasing depth makes West Indies a more formidable force in women’s cricket.

Semi-Final Showdown Against New Zealand

By finishing at the top of Group B, West Indies have avoided tournament favorites Australia in the semi-finals. They will now face New Zealand in Sharjah on Friday. The team’s remarkable turnaround in the tournament has inspired fans across the Caribbean, where cricket unites the region like nothing else.
