Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi Stand Up for Women’s Education in Afghanistan

Introduction
Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, two of Afghanistan’s biggest cricket stars, have spoken out strongly against the recent reports that the Taliban has closed institutes training women to become nurses and midwives. This decision is a further blow to women’s rights in Afghanistan, which have been severely restricted since the Taliban took control in 2021.

The Taliban’s Ban on Women’s Education

Since the Taliban’s return to power, women and girls in Afghanistan have faced increasing restrictions on their rights, including a ban on secondary and higher education. While there were some exceptions in the medical field, the recent closures of women’s training institutes mark a troubling setback.

This move has sparked concern not just among Afghan citizens, but also internationally, especially with Afghanistan’s status as a Full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) being questioned. Women’s participation in sports, including cricket, is also banned under the current regime.

Rashid Khan’s Plea for Change

Rashid Khan, the famous Afghanistan cricketer, took to Instagram to express his sadness and disappointment over the closures. He emphasized the importance of education for both men and women, stating, “Education holds a central place in Islamic teachings, emphasizing the pursuit of knowledge for both men and women.” Rashid further added that the Quran encourages learning and acknowledges the equal spiritual worth of both genders.

He urged the Taliban to reconsider their decision, highlighting the country’s critical need for more professionals, especially in the medical field. “The shortage of female doctors and nurses is particularly concerning as it directly impacts women’s healthcare and dignity,” he said. Rashid concluded by calling for Afghan girls to reclaim their right to education to help contribute to the country’s future.

Mohammad Nabi’s Support for Women’s Education

Mohammad Nabi, another cricketing icon from Afghanistan, echoed Rashid’s message on social media. He described the ban on girls studying medicine as not only heartbreaking but also deeply unjust. Nabi pointed out that Islam has always emphasized the importance of education for both men and women, and that history is full of inspiring Muslim women who have made significant contributions to society through knowledge.

Nabi urged the Taliban to reflect on these values and allow girls to pursue their education. He emphasized that denying girls the chance to study is a betrayal of their dreams and Afghanistan’s future. “Let our daughters study, grow, and build a better Afghanistan for everyone. This is their right, and it is our duty to protect it,” he wrote.

Support for Women’s Education Continues to Grow

Other Afghan figures, like cricketer Rahmanullah Gurbaz, have also shown their support for women’s education, voicing their opinions on social media.

Final Thoughts

The voices of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and others are crucial in raising awareness about the need to restore women’s education in Afghanistan. Their calls for change reflect the hope that, one day, Afghan girls will be able to pursue their dreams, contribute to their country’s growth, and live with dignity. It is time for the Taliban to reconsider their decision and allow Afghan women to reclaim their right to education.
